STNG ALERTS ::
Near the battle site at the Gifu, Guadalcanal, islanders created a tabletop museum with helmets, full-sized machine guns, bayonets and rifles. It was within 100 yards of one of the last battles on Guadalcanal. The Japanese fought to the death.   (Photo courtesy of Patricia Trowbridge)
Imagine trekking through a spooky jungle, so dark, so remote, that you strain to see even inches ahead. You think about turning back, but fear you could be lost for days and die in the steaming detritus on the jungle floor. Imagine that, just when you can't take another step and your arms and legs are burning with exhaustion, you see the dark outline of something massive and foreboding. It is stopped, you stop. And your heart stops.

Safia Jilani, 19, last month claimed she was attacked for being a Muslim by a masked gunman on campus, but she later told police she lied. She is no longer enrolled at the school, Ray said.

'Nutcracker' a tradition with Salt Creek Ballet
Bake all the cookies and wrap all the presents you want. For some people, it's just not Christmas without "The Nutcracker." Christina Salerno, an alumna of Salt Creek Ballet who went on to enjoy a career as a professional ballerina, can scarcely remember a Christmas season that didn't involve a production of the holiday ballet.
